Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System – Simplifying IT Operations and Enhancing Security with Meraki Video Surveillance

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System Baton Rouge

The Situation, Needs, and Challenges

Client: Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System
Industry: Healthcare

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOL) is a leading healthcare provider with ten hospitals and more than 400 clinics, creating a large and complex multi-site security environment. To modernize surveillance and reduce IT burden, FMOL partnered with Lockstep to deploy Meraki’s cloud-managed video solution across its facilities. Over a two-year period, Lockstep deployed more than 2,000 smart cameras, replacing legacy infrastructure with a centralized and scalable video management platform.

The Challenge:

Managing traditional video surveillance across a distributed healthcare network created both operational and administrative strain for FMOL.

Key challenges included:

  • High-maintenance infrastructure that required extensive server environments and dedicated IT resources.
  • Limited coverage caused by suboptimal camera placement, which created blind spots and drove the need for additional hardware.
  • Decentralized management that made it difficult to enforce consistent security policies and streamline maintenance across locations.
  • Privacy and regulatory concerns related to protecting sensitive video data in a healthcare setting.

The Solution:

To address these challenges, Lockstep deployed Meraki MV smart cameras and designed a cloud-managed video surveillance environment built for scale, simplicity, and security.

The solution included:

  • A serverless video architecture that eliminated the need for on-prem NVR and DVR servers, reducing infrastructure complexity and ongoing maintenance.

  • Centralized management through the Meraki cloud dashboard, enabling administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting across multiple facilities from a single interface.

  • End-to-end encryption and role-based access controls to support secure, private video management aligned with healthcare privacy requirements.

  • Strategic camera placement based on expert-led walkthroughs to maximize coverage while minimizing unnecessary device deployment.

  • A user-friendly dashboard that simplified monitoring, day-to-day management, footage access, alert configuration, and licensing scalability through Meraki EA.

The Outcome:

With the new environment in place, FMOL gained a more efficient and scalable surveillance strategy across its healthcare network. Outcomes included:

  • Reduced IT maintenance burden by eliminating server-related infrastructure and allowing internal teams to focus on higher-value initiatives.

  • Improved operational visibility through centralized remote monitoring and faster response times to incidents.

  • Stronger security and compliance through encrypted storage, role-based access, and advanced capabilities such as real-time weapons detection and facial recognition, with license plate recognition under evaluation for traffic monitoring.

  • Optimized device deployment with better camera coverage and fewer unnecessary devices.

“With Meraki’s cloud-based video surveillance, we have streamlined our security operations while significantly reducing IT maintenance costs. The centralized dashboard makes it easy to manage cameras across multiple locations, ensuring compliance and security at all times.”

– IT Director, FMOL Health System
